Question

Anomalous Highlighting of Files Scanned To pdf

When using Adobe Acrobat Pro for Mac, I am having an issue associated with documents that have been scanned to pdf.  When attempting to highlight text within this type of document, the cursor changes into a black box and the text is highlighted as a series of black boxes until the mouse button is released, at which time the black boxes disappear and the text reappears highlighted in the chosen color. This only occurs on the initial attempt to highlight.  Any other text highlighted subsequent to this initial attempt goes as expected (i.e., the cursor changes into a circle and the text is highlighted in the selected color).  This issue does not present itself when highlighting non-scanned pdf files (e.g., pdf files downloaded from the web or documents exported to pdf from applications like MS Word).  For non-scanned pdf files, the highlighting process goes as expected and the curson does not change into a black box.

I am using Adobe Acrobat Pro for Mac, version 2023.008.20470.

Any help resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, @Bullwink1e, I have a hunch about what's going on, let's try this:

If you click on the Highlight tool, further down on the tool stack, you'll see a dot (red arrow below). If that's black, then bingo, we've found it. If so, click on that, and it should open up to a variety of colors. Select the color you want. Also, look below that collection of different colored dots and notice the transparency setting. I set mine to about 50%.

Let me know if this solves the problem

Hello,

Thank you for your thoughts.  I don’t believe, however, that the issue I have described is associated with the color chosen for the highlighting. I have attached a short video of what I am seeing.

OK, that's weird.

As I mull over this, can you let me know if this does not occur on PDFs that are not OCRed PDFs? Or does this do this with all PDFs?

If this only does this with OCRed PDFs, can you please provide me the exact process you do to create them? Is there any chance you could share one of these PDFs with me? You can DM it if you want.
