Question

as of 26.001.21745 I have started having users get the Adobe Acrobat failed to print message.

It seems that since we have patched users with 26.001.21745, now when they try to print a PDF from any location to our papercut server, they are all getting the same Adobe has failed to print this document’ error box.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Last week we reinstalled adobe and updated to the latest version and we still have issues with printing. I did manage to test the ‘print as image’ option and it did not work.

I have had users disable protected mode and they are able to print also. We would like to have protected mode on though in the future.

Have seen similar behavior, some users are unable to print through our print service after update with protected mode enabled. Once disabled affected users are able to print. Windows 11. Newer PDF’s while older ones print without issue as well.

    Hi @TannerAS

    Thanks for sharing the update.

As you were able to print the PDFs after turning off the protected mode, please check the help articles listed below and see if that works:

Greetings, thank you for that information. I have already gone through those steps and articles, which did not provide any resolution. Even after most recent update to 26.001.21771 the issue still persists.

    Hello Amal,

It seems to happen with any PDF (any size as well) on the updated workstations.
If the user prints a PDF from Chrome for example yes it works fine.
I will check the server for last updated.

All affected machines are Windows 11 Pro 64 bit.
The print job starts and progress bar gets all the way to the end and it then fails with the message.

We looked for ‘Print as Image’ and it is not in that location.
We will try the repair and see what the results are.
We are not removing the printer driver as it works with every other application
We have tried PDF’s from local drives, network drives, and even Outlook attachments.

    Hi @cjamesonbbo,

Thank you for the update and for confirming those details.

It's helpful to know that the issue occurs with all PDFs, regardless of file size or location, and that the print job completes before failing. It's also useful to know that printing the same PDF from Chrome works as expected.

Please let us know the outcome after running the Repair Installation.

Also, regarding Print as Image, are you looking under File > Print > Advanced? If the option isn't available there, could you share a screenshot of the Print dialog? That will help us better understand what you're seeing.

Additionally, are all affected machines running the same Acrobat version (26.001.21745), and does the issue occur across multiple printers or only a specific printer queue?

I'm looking forward to hearing back from you.

    Thanks,
    ^BS

    Hi @cjamesonbbo

Hope you're doing well, and thanks for reaching out. We are sorry for the trouble.

Before we dig into fixes, could you help us with a few quick questions?

    1. Does the error happen with all PDFs, or only specific ones? (For example, does a brand new, simple one-page PDF fail too?)

    2. Can the same user print successfully to a local or directly attached printer, bypassing PaperCut entirely?

    3. Has your PaperCut server or its drivers received any updates around the same time as the Acrobat patch?

    4. Are all affected machines on the same OS version and bitness (32-bit vs 64-bit Acrobat) Mac or Windows?

    5. Does the error appear immediately on clicking Print, or after the job is sent to the queue?

These answers will help us rule out whether this is an Acrobat issue, a PaperCut compatibility issue, or a driver interaction.

In the meantime, please try the steps below and see if that works

Step 1: Try "Print as Image" as an immediate workaround

This bypasses the standard rendering pipeline and often gets jobs through while the root cause is investigated.

    1. Open the PDF in Acrobat and go to File > Print.

    2. Click Advanced in the Print dialog.

    3. Check "Print as Image" and click OK.

    4. Click Print.

This option is covered in Adobe's official help article on fixing PDF printing errors: https://adobe.ly/4wa0xSg adobe

Step 2: Run a Repair on Acrobat

A fresh patch sometimes leaves the installation in a partially inconsistent state.

    1. Close Acrobat on the affected machine.

    2. Go to Help > Repair Acrobat Installation (Windows).

    3. Restart the machine and test printing again.

Step 3: Check and update your printer drivers

Remove your printer driver and reboot the computer then visit your printer manufacturer's website, locate the drivers section, and download the latest drivers for your model. After installation, restart the computer and try printing again.

Step 4: Test the PDF file itself

Try saving the PDF directly to the local hard drive rather than opening from a network location, rename the file using only letters and numbers, and then try printing from that saved copy. This helps isolate whether any file-path or permissions issue is contributing.

Step 5: Check for a newer Acrobat update

Open Acrobat, go to Menu > Help > Check for Updates, install any available updates, and restart your computer once, and see if that works.

Let us know how it goes.
