Auto detection of radio buttons

I'm in the process of updating a form that uses extensive radio buttons, and for the life of me can't seem to get Acrobat to auto-detect them. Is there any way to do this?

 

I'll also add that I'm open to any tools that make it possible to tag field types when creating a document. I'm using Google Docs at the moment for this, but am certainly not wedded to it if there's a better option.

One option is to use a character that can be picked up using a script, such as a Wingdings symbol, and then place the field over it.

Auto detect is extremely imperfect, especially for radio buttons.  I created a (paid for) tool that automatically creates mutually exclusive check box or radio button groups.  You would have to move them into place:
