Availability Of Acrobat Pro Software Updates

I purchased Adobe Acrobat Pro in 2012 as a once-off payment and have been able to upgrade this on a regular basis and currently operate version 10.1.16

This version would appear to be incompatible with most recent versions and in trying to update, I receive the message "unable to connect to Adobe update server".

My suspicion is that this is a deliberate ploy by Adobe to update on to current software only available on a monthly rental basis.

Am I correct in this assumption ?
