Bates-numbering has stopped replacing file names with Bates No.

Bates-numbering has stopped working in my Adobe Acrobat Pro 2020. It is not replacing file names with Bates Nos. As soon as I close the dialog box, and reopen it, the box has been unchecked. When I go ahead with the Bates-stamping I get error messages that docs are read only.  They're not. There is no security and all editing is allowed. Only the first document gets stamped and if I want to save it I have to rename it. I've made multiple copies of the docs in different folders, local drive, server, etc. I’ve restarted my computer twice, etc. Nothing works. I have bates-stamped thousands of documents and never had this happen.  I do occasionally have an issue with one or two files and have had to reprint, etc. This is happening with every file I loaded (appx. 50 documents that have come from different sources). Help!

I FINALLY figured it out.  I had added a forward slash in the Bates prefix which I guess I have never done before.  Once I took it out everything worked as normal.  Thank you for your reply-I appreciate you taking the time.

Hello @Raven0907,

Thank you for reaching out, and we are sorry to hear you are experiencing this, especially after successfully using Bates numbering for years without any issues.

The behavior you are describing across all your files, including the read-only errors and the checkbox resetting, suggests something on your system may be affecting how files are being accessed during processing, rather than an issue with Acrobat itself.

We recommend running a full scan with your antivirus or endpoint security software to rule out any system-level interference that may be affecting file permissions. This is often the cause of read-only errors on files with no restrictions set.

Please note that Acrobat Pro 2020 reached End of Support on November 30, 2025, meaning it no longer receives technical support or security updates from Adobe. If you continue to require a fully supported version, Adobe recommends upgrading to a current Acrobat subscription or Acrobat Pro 2024. More information is available at:
