Bookmarks disappear when shared to cloud

I have shared document. I spent hours putting in the bookmarks, but once I went back to the document the bookmarks were gone. I tried saving it, but all that does is make a copy. On the copy version (my view only) the bookmarks are there. I need the bookmarks to be available for my team. Is there a way to fix this?
