Bullets/Lists: how to adjust spacing btw number/period and the text after it?

Hi all,

I'm working on a doc in Acrobat, and getting very irritated about spacing between the number and text for numbered list items.

For single digit numbers, there's a space or two between the number and the text... but as soon as I get into double digit numbers it automatically places 8 spaces there instead. It looks bad, and I can't find any way to change it (I know how to fix that in Illustrator, but I don't see similar controls here.)

If I try to manually override it by deleting the number/period and typing it in, it screws up the vertical spacing so that the list is no longer uniform.

If anyone has any insights about how to fix this, I'll be forever grateful! (Here's a screenshot to show what I'm referring to.)
