Calculating based on dropdown list across multiple pages

I am looking to calculate sub totals dependant on a dropdown list, the field values change because the pages are based off a template. I want to be able to seperate the different sub totals and tally them based on categories across multiple pages. Help is most appreciated I been wracking my brain on how to solve this.

    If you use templates, you will need custom script that check if fields exist before calculating them.

    Do you mean you want to add up all the items under the General category, for example?
