Question

Can a PDF have variables modifiable by a script?

Hi,

Sometimes, we need to modify the release version in a product release notes file and many other SW guides and manuals after the documents have been approved. It happens when R&D make last minute changes to a SW package (special drops) and decide to increment the SW version. Is there a way to inject the SW version that appears on the PDF front page of the documents as a variable that can be modified by scripting? In other words, can the PDF files be input to some scripting language or plugin that allows modifying the version (as a variable) automatically rather than having to edit the PDF files manually, or modifying the FrameMaker/WORD source files and reproducing a bunch of PDF files?

Example by scenario:

We have a SW drop this weekend. The currently planned version number right now is 1.1.000. It is possible that R&D will make last minute modifications to the SW and rev it up to 1.1.001 over the weekend.

A bunch of PDF files already indicate on the front page ver 1.1.000, and the technical writer might not be available over the weekend (we do have a life sometimes). Is there some mechanism to enable R&D to run a script on the current PDF files and modify the version listed on the front page of each PDF to say 1.1.001 instead?

Many thanks in advance,

Hani

PDF is really very unsuited to this.

I think your best bet would be to look at automating Frame and Word, rather than trying to fix up PDFs.

Thank you, MVP. That's what we do. I am hoping there is some plugin that enables post-editing automatically.

Best regards,
