Can I change settings to prevent opening the pdf of a right click doc to pdf conversion?

Yes, this can be turned off. The right-click "Convert to Adobe PDF" option uses the Adobe PDF printer behind the scenes, and its "view result" setting controls whether the PDF opens automatically:

• Open Windows Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners (or Control Panel > Devices and Printers).

• Click "Adobe PDF" > Printing preferences.

• Under the Adobe PDF Settings tab, uncheck "View Adobe PDF result."

• Click OK / Apply.
  
  

If you're converting a Word/Office document specifically and it still opens after that, there's a second setting worth checking in Acrobat itself: Menu > Preferences > General. Under the Basic Tools section, deselect "Always open PDFs exported from MS Office."
