Can't change font from random default one in Adobe Acrobat Pro

For some reason the default font has changed and I can't change it -even if I continue typing in a text box that has text in a different font it reverts to the default font.  It doesn't give the name of the font.

Hello @Baronie5E14

I hope you are doing well, and thank you for reaching out. We're sorry for the trouble you had.

Could you please share more details about the issue? Are you on a Mac or Windows machine, and what is the version? Is it happening with one specific PDF, or with all the PDFs?

Try the following steps, and let us know how it goes:

Please ensure you have the latest version of Acrobat installed on the machine: 25.001.21111. Planned update, Jan 20, 2026. Check for any pending updates by navigating to Menu > Help> Check for Updates. Install the updates, restart the app and the machine, and try again.

Check and reset your default & fallback font settings:

Windows: Menu > Preferences > Content Editing
macOS: Acrobat > Preferences > Content Editing

From there:

  • Choose your desired font under Default font for Add Text.
  • Choose a fallback font under Fallback font for Editing (this controls what Acrobat uses when it can’t detect or match an existing font).
  • Click OK to save.

If editing existing text still reverts the font
Even with the right font settings, Acrobat might fall back when:

  • The original text was created using a font not installed on your system
  • The font is embedded but not editable
  • The text object is part of a scanned or OCR layer that isn’t truly formatted text

In such cases, switching to “Add Text” (instead of editing existing text) often gives you full control over font selection.

Also, if you’re using Text Box annotations (from the Comment tools), you can right‑click the box border and choose Make Properties Default, but note that this only affects comment annotations, not true text‑editing in PDFs.

Make sure the font you want to use is installed on your system before selecting it in Acrobat.

If it’s a fillable form field (Prepare Form), use the Appearance tab in field Properties to set font and size for those fields individually.

I hope this helps.

Regards,

Anand Sri.
