Can't Delete a PDF File

Short of using End Task or Rebooting my computer, PDF files remain locked from deletion, renaming or relocating. Been months now, with endless searches all leading to nothing more than others having the same problems.

Try this: Go to Menu (or Edit if you're using the old UI) - Preferences - Security (Enhanced) and make sure that everything there is disabled.

I've tried this. I can exit the file, even close the folder and open a PDF from another folder then close that one. Still can't get Adobe to release hold to the old file allowing my to rename the folder etc.

Only solution is to run Task Manager and End Task for all items associated with Adobe. Once that is done the file will allow me to "Try Again" and rename the folder.

Been an issue as long as I an remember. Several upgrades and replacements etc.

Hi @19248794,

This seems to be a system-related issue, not Acrobat or Reader; you may wait for more input from other users or experts.

In the meantime, check the following and let us know if that helps.

Disable the Preview Pane in File Explorer

The Preview Pane can lock files, preventing deletion.

  • Open File Explorer.

  • Click on the View tab.

  • Ensure the Preview Pane is turned off.

Also, could you share if the files are located locally on the machine or on Network or Cloud Drive?

I've tried this due to other comments found. No Help.
