Question

Can`t open files sent to other computers ( Acrobat DC)

When I send a file to someone without DC on their computer or phone they can`t open it. I hope it`s not because they need to spend $155 a year just to get my attachments. I have sent to multiple computers and phone which have Adobe Acrobat and PDF readers, but none have the DC. Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi Rdessewffy,

Assuming that you created the form with Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, have you tried saving the file first as "Optimized" in order to be able to use it in tablets and mobile devices?

Does this PDF form has any document scripts and/or calculated fields?

Maybe your form does not have any document scripts, but if it does, it  will not work when  the form is exported into a mobile device (someone correct me if I am wrong please); calculated fields will work  in your mobile device if you apply them through hidden fields, not as document scripts.

That being said, would saving the file as shown in the steps below help in anyway to accomplish your goal?

I don't have on hand the link that I read a few months ago,  but I read in an article that you can save your pdf documents with this "Save As--> Reader Extended" option.

It will allow your  users to save a copy, fill and/or sign that form in their mobile device with the free Adobe Reader DC app (it is not necessary to use a paid subscription to do this.

Saving your document  in reader extended also allows Desktop users to open , view, fill and sign the form with older Acrobat versions (that is,  if they cannot afford a paid subscription at this time like using Acrobat Pro DC if your intent is to also grant those users with the ability to edit and create changes in the original document).

The mobile users, however, will need to also  install the Adobe Fill & Save free app in their mobile device(s) if the form requires to be filled, signed and/or to initial any fields.

Hi Rdessewffy,

I understand the situation, as described above you are not able to open the pdf file on the system as it gives you the error to buy the Adobe Acrobat DC.

In the screenshot attached above you have selected Drive PDF Viewer which is different from Adobe Acrobat Services. Please select Adobe Acrobat on the right and then click on always to make it the default program to open the PDF files.

I hope this will help, keep us updated with the results.

Regards,

Amal

I tried to open it other ways on my phone, it just happens to be highlighted on wrong one in screenshot. Get same message. This is only the phone. I can`t open on PC either, accept for the PC I created it on. Thanks.

Please tell us how you created the PDF. What software did you use to create the content, and what are the steps you used to make the PDF?

Also, go to File > Properties > Description and show a screenshot of the creation package.

Does it say it is an Adobe PDF or a Microsoft PDF or something else? Adobe is not the only software company that makes PDFs and it may be a PDF made by another vendor.

Yes, It`s a home inspector report using their software along with Adobe.

The free Adobe (Acrobat) Reader should be sufficient. Make sure the recipients are actually using this application, though, and not something else. Many people think they use Reader when in fact they open the file elsewhere, most likely inside a browser window.

Hi

On your phone or iPad, download or update the free app for Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. This is what it looks like on my iPad.

Then on the Open With screen in your screen shot, choose Adobe Acrobat, not Drive PDF Viewer.
