Question

Cannot save Acrobat file - number is out of range

My document consists of 183 pages and was saved in Dropbox.  I opened the document, made lots of changes (mostly highlighting sections and adding notes) and when I tried to save I received the same error message.  I have tried:

1) Saving document with a different name in a different location

2) Turning off "Save As optimizes for Fast Web Review"

3) Using the Postscript workaround

None of the above worked.  In fact the third one (Postscript) made it much worse - I received error message 109 (Document could not be saved.  There was an error reading this document) and now ALL of my pages are BLANK.  The original, unedited document is still intact on Dropbox but what about all of my changes?!  AutoSave was turned on, should have been saving every 5 minutes.  I have looked in the Acrobe AutoSave and found a file called 1.tmp but I can't open it.  I am reluctant to try too many tricks since the last one left me staring at 183 BLANK pages.

I need some help with this please, it is urgent.  I am absolutely fuming and the only stopping me from being bloody furious is that on this occasion the work is not for a client.  If this were for a client I would be in an incredibly difficult position.  This problem appears to be fairly common judging by the number of search engine results on the same topic!

You may also refer to a similar discussion here (https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat/can-not-save-pdf-to-hard-disk/m-p/10856097?page=1#M236211) and see if the help.

Fix the problem immediately,  a lot of organizations can't get their work done because of this issue.  None of the suggested tips fix the issue.  Adobe has a major bug and it should be resolved otherwise we'll adopt a competeing company for PDF editing.

When error message 109 is displayed, it means that the file is corrupt.

Do you remember any unusual instance that happened when you downloaded the document from cloud storage?

Have you tried repairing the installation of Adobe that you have?

Thank you Ruskin.  Nothing unusual happened when I opened the file.  Up until the point that I tried the Postscript idea suggested in (yet another) thread about this problem, there was no error 109.  Attempting to save the file in Postscript format appeared to trigger error 109.  So that's just marvellous - the thing that was supposed to help could have made it worse.  As for "repairing" my installation of Acrobat, I didn't want to close Acrobat until I have resolved the problem with this document but it apprearst that is now not an option so I may as well try to repair.  What do you mean by that exactly?  Uninstall and reinstall?  According to Adobe I already have the most recent version.  I'm still fuming about this, I have lost hours of work.

Thank you JR, I tried force quitting and it did ask if I wanted to recover the last document but it then told me there was a problem and it couldn't open that file.

DESPITE USING AUTOSAVE (set to every five minutes), I have lost over three hours' work.  How on earth has this happened?

It's obviously a file issue…

Try to "Force Quit" Acrobat, so on next launch it should prompt you about not saved documents…
