Question

Capital "I" disappearing when converting from Word to PDF

We are experiencing an issue with capital "I"s dropping/disappearing when converting Microsoft Word files to PDFs, using Adobe Acrobat. This happens in every instance where we use the font family Verlag (mostly headings, captions, graphic titles, etc).  All other fonts throughout the document are fine and do not have this issue.

If anyone has any insight or solutions it woudl be greatly appreciated, as this problem is effecting our daily workflow using Word and Adobe Acrobat together.

Thanks!

There is a known issue with the most recent update to Acrobat DC (and I believe Acrobat 2017 and possibly Acrobat 2015) in which some characters are getting dropped if you have pair kerning and ligatures are enabled in the text being saved as PDF with Acrobat. Check if you have both pair kerning and ligatures (of any type) enabled for the text where you are experiencing character drops and if so, disable both and see if the problem no longer appears.

The fix for this particular problem will be made available in the next update in the next few weeks.

I'm having a similiar issue with Palatino, but in the places where it's dropping all the capital H, kerning is not turned on. Support told me I just have to use an adobe font instead. Palatino is a well-known and widely used font. I don't get why it won't work. Bu it does if I only do a print to PDF instead of using the Create PDF feature. So what am I paying for?

Really interesting. I turned off kerning and SOME of my capital H's showed up. Some did not. I have two lines in adjacent paragraphs. Both have the words HAPPY BIRTHDAY at the end of a line. In one, the capital H in happy and birthday are there. In the next, it is not. They were both created using the same style. The only difference between the two lines is that the one with the missing capital H's, there is an ope quote before HAPPY.

My guess is that the font is either corrupt or the glyph table is off. How exactly are you converting to PDF? Describe the steps.
