Changed .joboptions file not used by Acrobat Pro DC

I need to change the standard PDF version used in Acro Pro DC 2017 from 1.5 (Acrobat 6.x) to 1.4 (Acrobat 5.x).

I have tried a variety of methods (e.g., changing the Compatibility to Acrobat 5 in Standard.joboptions  and saving as Standard(1).joboptions). I also tried adding PDF/A-1b:2005 (RGB).joboptions.

Each method seems to be accepted -- but whenever I re-save any existing PDF it still shows the version as 1.5 (Acrobat 6.x).

I do have a workaround (Save as Other > Optimised PDF, with the Settings of Acro 5 and later selected), but this adds an extra step, more time and the risk of missing this vital step.

I have searched the Adobe site to little avail. Can anyone please help?

Job option files are used only by Distiller, and only when you make a new PDF by printing to PDF. They have no impact on ordinary saving, because a PDF is not being created anew. You cannot do what you want; the PDF Optimizer cannot be made the default.
