Question

Chrome extension versions after 26.5.2 are causing sites to not be able to open PDFs

My company uses a site that converts ENV files to PDFs and this has worked for 10 years. After the latest 2 chrome extension update for Adobe, it is now giving a 403 access denied message. Extension version 26.5.2 worked without having to change anything. Version 26.7.x.x and 26.8.1.2 are causing issues. We have to now turn off the “allow access to file URLs” and turn off the “Online PDFs” in the Open PDFs in Acrobat from your browser section of Adobe Acrobat Preferences to get this function to work. What has changed and can we get back to where we don’t have to manually change settings for something that worked fine up until last week.

    Hi @Amal Jaiswal and @__Gaurav_ ,

The website is https://www.aiready.com/ConvPdf/ and it is publicly available. Our version of Chrome is 151.0.7922.76. This is happening on every machine running Adobe extensions later than 26.5.2.
I am more than happy to join a screen share to reproduce the issue with you. I am unable to share a specific file at this time due to NPI. I am trying to locate a dummy file we can use.

    Hi @jstatus10 ,

    Hope you’re doing well.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this regression caused, and we really appreciate the detailed information you provided, it was helpful for our investigation.

We recently released version 26.8.1.5 of the Acrobat Chrome extension to the Chrome Web Store, which contains a fix for this behavior. Could you please update to version 26.8.1.5 and let us know if the issue is resolved?

    To update the extension manually:

    1. Go to chrome://extensions in your Chrome browser.

    2. Toggle on Developer mode in the top-right corner.

    3. Click the Update button at the top left.

    4. Verify that the Acrobat extension shows version 26.8.1.5.

If the issue persists after updating, lets schedule a quick call or screen-sharing session to better understand your environment and work directly toward a resolution. Please let us know time slot that works best for you.

Thank you again for your time and patience. We look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards,
    Gaurav

    Hi @jstatus10 ,
Additionally, if the PDF or the website used to generate it is publicly accessible, could you please share the URL (if you're comfortable doing so)? Having access to the same workflow would greatly help us reproduce the issue and investigate it more effectively.

If the URL cannot be shared publicly due to company policies or internal access restrictions, that's completely understandable.

Also, if it's convenient for you, we'd be happy to connect over a quick call or screen-sharing session to better understand the issue and work towards a resolution. We're committed to investigating this thoroughly and appreciate your help in reproducing the problem.

    Hi @jstatus10 ,

Thanks for reaching out, and sorry for the disruption, especially given that this workflow had been running fine for 10 years with no changes needed on your end.

This does sound like a regression tied to the last couple of extension releases (26.7.x.x and 26.8.1.2) rather than anything wrong with your setup, since the same workflow worked cleanly on 26.5.2 with default settings. The fact that turning off "Allow access to file URLs" for the extension and disabling "Online PDFs" under Open PDFs in Acrobat from your browser in Acrobat Preferences gets things working again strongly suggests one of these recent updates changed how the extension requests or intercepts files, likely a permissions or file-handling change that slipped into 26.7/26.8.

A few details that would help:

    • Whether the site your company uses is public or requires login/internal network access, if it's public, sharing the URL lets Adobe try to reproduce it directly.

    • Your exact Chrome version, since browser-level changes sometimes interact with extension permission behavior too.

    • Whether this happens on every machine running 26.7.x.x/26.8.1.2, or only some.

In the meantime, since you've already found a working combination of settings, sticking with "Allow access to file URLs" off and "Online PDFs" off sounds like a reasonable stopgap.
