Compress a pdf is not working in Acrobat Pro

Question

I am using the latest Windows version of Acrobat Pro (no updates are available). Lately when I have tried to compress a pdf, the result is a pdf whose size is greater that what it started with. Since this is the predominate reason I purchased the product, this is a real problem. This used to work quite well for a single file as well as for multiple files, but not now. Any words of wisdom?

What settings are you using when (trying to) compress the file? What exact command?Also, what doe the Audit Space Usage window shows for the before and after versions of the file?
