How do I convert pdf files created in acrobat 5.x to an up to date version?

PDF files created in Acrobat 5.x are fully compatible with all newer versions of Acrobat or any conforming PDF reader.

That is the beauty of the PDF standard. It was designed such that even PDF files created with Acrobat 1.0 can be opened, viewed, printed, and otherwise manipulated in the most recent versions of Acrobat.

However, I was given a disc which was put together 10 years ago using Acrobat 5 by a friend who for whom it would not work.  I tried it and the latest Reader would not open any of the pdfs on the disc.  I was able to load it into Acrobat itself and it worked but when I saved the pdfs they still did not work.  I have found that by opening the pdf using the right click menu and choosing 'Edit with Acrobat' found that this time , after resaving, the pdfs all work.  I was in too much of a hurry to ask the question before trying all options but thanks for taking the time to reply.

We would like to see examples of such files. We have not encountered any in the past. Contact me via private message on the forums with a pointer to such files and we will investigate.

There's no need to do that.
