Converting from PDF to Word causes distortions and cuts sentences in half horizontally or masks them

As the title states, Im trying to convert a book (broke it down into chapters, each being max. 200 sites) into word so I can change stuff, add translations etc. 

My issue is that some chapters are well done while others are a disaster. See picture.
I have also included the clean pdf version. What could the issue be? How can I fix it?

I think it is because of the numbers under the Chemical elements, like HCO has 3 under the O, NH4 has 4 under the H, that may disturb it.

is there a way where I can force it to write the numbers and negative or positive signs always on a line? As in:
CO2, or NH4+, HCO3-?

As the issue occurs with a particular document, please share the PDF with us so we can check. Is it a scanned PDF?

It seems to be font-related behaviour. However, we will need the PDF to check and confirm.
