Getting corrupted boxes when merging one PDF that is in OS Roman encoding (Aerial font) with a PDF that is Microsoft ANSI encoding (Aerial font).

Is this a known issue?

Hi @reece_0775,

Thanks for sharing this. Based on your description, it sounds like the characters are turning into boxes after merging, which usually points to a font encoding or embedding issue during the merge process.

Here are a few things that might help:

  1. Check font embedding in each source file (File > Properties > Fonts). If fonts aren’t embedded, Acrobat may substitute them incorrectly during the merge.

  2. Try printing each file to Adobe PDF before merging — this helps flatten and re-encode fonts cleanly.

  3. If preserving appearance is more important than searchability, try using Preflight > Convert fonts to outlines.

  4. After merging, try File > Save As Other > Optimized PDF and ensure fonts are embedded correctly in the output.

Let us know how it works for you.
