Hi @andrews8437179

Thanks for the great question.

Based on how Adobe Acrobat works, validating a digital signature does not alter the signed content of the document. However, certain Acrobat behaviors might make it seem like something has changed, even though the signed content remains cryptographically intact.

Here’s what actually happens:

Acrobat Behavior During Signature Validation:

1. No Change to Signed Content:

  • When a digital signature is applied in Acrobat, it locks the document (or specific fields, depending on settings).

  • Validating the signature only checks the certificate chain, the timestamp, and file integrity — Acrobat does not modify the signed portion of the document during this process.

2. Appearance May Update:

  • Acrobat may render or refresh the signature field's visual appearance (especially if a dynamic visual element like a logo, timestamp, or reason field was used).

  • This can make it look different, but this is purely cosmetic and doesn’t affect the integrity of the signed content.

3. Trust Configuration Effects

  • When the certificate is validated, Acrobat might show additional UI elements:

    • Signature validity status (green check, question mark, etc.)

    • Revocation or timestamp verification

  • These changes are part of how Acrobat presents the signature, not a change to the file itself.

Key Point:

As you may know, if the document was altered after it was signed, Acrobat will clearly flag this under the Signature Panel:

“The document has been modified since the signature was applied.”

You can verify this by:

  • Opening the Signatures Panel (View > Show/Hide > Navigation Panes > Signatures)

  • Right-clicking the signature and choosing “Validate Signature”

  • Reviewing the modification and timestamp status

You have the option of adding validation related information to signed PDFs. This can make the PDF "LTV-enabled".
