Which app is opening normally? Acrobat, or Reader?

They both open seemingly normally, but acrobat issues the "trial expired" warning.   I have not gone into it in detail to determine how much functionality acrobat has, it can read pdf's I don't know if it can update them.

Hmm. What I'm wondering is whether it's setting ups connection to Reader instead, which then fails. But there are other possibilities. If Acrobat takes too long to start, or pops up a message while starting, the request will time out. So try starting Acrobat first.

I have tried that previously, but not with much confidence.   Since I am using "CreateObject" I would expect it to start up a new instance of Adobe regardless to whether it's already open or not.   Having said that, I notice that there is a little circle in the lower left corner that says the product has expired.  I did not notice this, as it seemed to be opening normally.   Could that be the cause?

Ok, you have the current version of Acrobat Reader. It's possible that is the problem. What version of Acrobat is also installed?

Revision of the Reader is 2017 Release I Version 2017.009.20044

Revision of Acrobat is 2017 Release I (Continuous) Version 2017.009.20044
