Creating a Fillable Form

I have the same problem.  I signe up with adobe becasue of this function and it does not show under tools or edit.

1. Enable the Developer Tab: The first step is to ensure the "Developer" tab is visible in the Word ribbon. This tab contains all the necessary tools for adding form controls. If it's not visible, you can usually enable it through Word's options.
2. Start with a Document: You can begin with a blank document or an existing template. Word offers online templates specifically for forms.
3. Add Content Controls: From the "Developer" tab, you can insert various content controls:
   • Rich Text and Plain Text Content Controls: These allow users to type text. Rich text controls enable formatting (bold, italic), while plain text controls restrict it.
   • Picture Content Control: Useful for templates where a user might need to insert an image.
   • Building Block Content Control: Allows users to select from predefined blocks of text, useful for boilerplate content.
   • Combo Box and Drop-Down List Content Controls: Combo boxes allow users to select from a list or type their own entry, while drop-down lists restrict choices to predefined options.
   • Date Picker Content Control: Provides a calendar interface for selecting dates.
   • Check Box Content Control: For yes/no or multiple-choice selections.
   • Legacy Form Controls: These are available for compatibility with older Word versions and include text form fields, check box form fields, and drop-down form fields.
4. Set Control Properties: Each content control has properties that can be customized. For example, you can set the date format for a Date Picker or define the list items for a Drop-Down List.
5. Protect the Form: To limit how much others can edit or format the form, use the "Restrict Editing" command under the "Developer" tab. You can choose to allow only "Filling in forms" or protect specific sections. For content controls, grouping the document content (excluding a final paragraph mark) can prevent editing outside the controls while keeping the document flexible.
6. Save and Distribute: Save the document. It can then be distributed for users to fill out. Note that fillable forms created in the desktop version of Word will display changes in Word for the web, but creation is not supported in the web version.

Creating a Fillable PDF

Fillable PDFs are highly versatile, allowing forms to be completed digitally across various devices and platforms without requiring specific editing software. Adobe Acrobat and Jotform are popular tools for this purpose.

1. Using Adobe Acrobat:
   • Open Acrobat: Launch the application.
   • Select a File or Scan: You can start with a new document, an existing PDF, a scanned document, or even a file created in Word or Excel.
   • Prepare Form Tool: Navigate to "Tools" and select "Prepare Form." Acrobat can automatically detect static form fields and convert them into fillable text fields.
   • Add/Edit Form Fields: You can manually add new form fields (text boxes, checkboxes, drop-down menus, signature fields), rearrange existing ones, edit headings, and insert buttons. Advanced features like automatic calculations and data validation rules can also be implemented.
   • Save and Distribute: Once complete, save the fillable PDF. You can then distribute it via email or an internal server directly from Acrobat.
2. Using Jotform:
   • Create an Account: Sign up for a free Jotform account.
   • Create from Scratch or Upload Existing PDF: You can build a fillable PDF form from scratch using their builder or upload an existing PDF to convert it into a fillable form.
   • Customize: Add various fillable fields like text boxes, checkboxes, multiple-choice questions, and signature fields. You can also add page numbers, brand images, and logos.
   • Automate Responses: Set up automatic email responses to send copies of completed forms to respondents.
   • Download and Share: Save a copy of your fillable PDF or share it via a link, email, QR code, or social media. Jotform's fillable PDFs are designed to work across all desktop and mobile devices.
   • Password Protection: Jotform also offers the option to password-protect your fillable PDFs for enhanced security.

Fillable forms, whether in Word or PDF format, offer significant benefits such as saving time and money, reducing errors, improving user experience, and safeguarding information. They are crucial for efficient data collection, e-signature acquisition, and streamlining workflows in various settings, from business operations to academic administration.

After opening the PDF, you can view All tools on the left of Acrobat window to see Prepare Forms tool or you can search for the tool as well using Ctrl+F

Try pressing Ctrl + Shift + 7 (Windows OS).

Does this happen with all files? Maybe the file you're trying to edit is secured or digitally signed, which would prevent adding form fields to it.
