Creating numbered circles that auto-number sequentially

I know how to insert numbered circles in PDFs I'm commenting on (not numbered or bulleted lists, but colorful circles on different areas of a document that can be used as reference points). Is there a way to set these up so they auto-number sequentially? Instead of my having to keep track and insert the number I'm on every time. Thank you.
