Question

Data Field format changes when Requesting E-Signatures

I have a fillable PDF form with 2 boxes that calculate the value of a selection of other data fields.  However, when I go to "Request E-Signatures", Adobe automatically changes the format from "Number" to "Text" on these 2 boxes, which results in an error.  I am able to change these back to Numbers and the formulas work fine, but I want Adobe to leave them as Numbers to start with.

Adobe does NOT change the format of other data fields that are formatted to be Numbers.  It's only the 2 fields that include a calculation.

Any idea how to fix this?

Hi @Arzelie230505634ydo,

Thank you for reaching out and explaining the issue.

When a PDF form is sent for e-signature via Acrobat Sign, the platform may optimize or adapt certain field properties — including formatting and appearance — to ensure consistent behavior across devices, browsers, and screen sizes. This is especially true for fields like dates, numbers, and special formats, which are sometimes rendered differently in the signing environment than they appear in the original Acrobat form.

This behavior is expected to some extent, as Acrobat Sign transforms the original form into a web-compatible version that prioritizes input usability and reliability over preserving exact field formatting.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Field formatting (like date masks or numeric validation) may be stripped or replaced with Acrobat Sign-compatible settings.

  • Appearance settings (fonts, colors, alignment) may not always carry over exactly as seen in Acrobat.

  • This ensures signers can interact with the form smoothly, especially on mobile devices.

Note: If you are creating a PDF form in Acrobat, ensure to choose the option: "Prepare form for e-signing", how get the option, open the file(PDF Form) in Acrobat > All Tools > "Prepare a form", click on the three dots > choose "Prepare form for e-signing"

This option ensures the Form Fields get converted to Fields compatible with Acrobat Sign.
