Question

DC dropdown menu malfunctions on IOS.

Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble with forms created in Acrobat DC and need some assistance.

Issue is that dropdown menus added to my form in Acrobat DC for Windows, are malfunctioning when read in IOS. Selecting an option results in the option one above it being selected.

I've been through all the forums here and elsewhere, but can't find an answer.

We are trying to make a form which can be sent in email to users, almost all on most recent IOS on Iphone 6. We want them to select options and type in, return by email in order to avoid having to push a PDF reader to handle this.

I've tried multiple times to remove and recreate the dropdowns. Odd thing is that it seems to work with just two options but more than this aren't handled correctly.

Does anyone else have this experience or any advice please?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi all!!! Re. PDFs from Acrobat DC Dropdown menus not functioning correctly in IOS Mail.

So after having followed a lengthy support process with Apple, including saving logs from Iphones and sending my PDFs in to level 3 Apple Mail for IOS engineers, they have concluded that in fact the error is Adobe's responsibility!

This query appears to be following the classic pattern between Adobe and Apple blaming each other, with no recourse to answers for the user. So i'm highlighting the problem again.

Can any users of this forum confirm they can make a PDF in Acrobat DC, which when emailed and opened in an IOS Iphone Mail app, displays the dropdown menus, and are able to select them and return the right value, rather than selection returning the one directly above?

Has anyone experienced the same or similar issue?

We are not really able to push Acrobat Reader to the company phones due to IT complexity and bureaucracy. So we really need the IOS Mail app to open our PDF and make it possible to select from a dropdown.

We have found this issue on current IOS on both Iphone 7 and Iphone 6plus so far.

I'm guessing it is something of the legacy issue with 'click' and 'hover' on the touchscreen device.

Does anyone know a workaround? A script that forces IOS mail to read values and return them correctly? Or a free online PDF form creator that authors PDF forms which actually work in IOS Mail?

I'm open to all ideas. It's hard to know if this is an Acrobat DC issue or IOS Mail. The classic problem is it's too easy to blame the other guy rather than find an answer.

Any reasonable suggestions are much appreciated.

I think the discussion above summed up this issue. The fault is with the application, not the file (unless you prove otherwise).

A solution needs to come from the developers of that application, ie Apple.

So. Thank you to the two guys who have replied so far without addressing the issue whatsoever. I am still looking for anyone who is able to meaningfully further my query. It appears that Acrobat DC form Dropdown menus are not fully compatible with IOS mail. Has anyone else experienced this, and does anyone have little gems of knowledge that might be helpful please?

Sorry Bernd, this is incorrect. It is Adobe software which has created the form, therefore I am using it. Please leave answers to others if you cannot see the correlation or appreciate the use scenario.

Does you test the form with Acrobat Reader for iOS?

I refer you to my previous answer.

Bernd, I am of course in discussion with Apple also. However this is a classic case of 'blame the other guy', Adobe and Apple systems are used together by millions of users, and I feel it is reasonable to expect Adobe to have debugged their software to be compatible with major operating systems. I am looking for solutions in the real world.

No, it's not. Unless you can prove that the fault is with how the file was created (and assuming that was done in an Adobe application), Adobe is in no way responsible, and can't be expected to, change the way its code works to accommodate for the bugs in third-party applications, even if those parties are very large, like Apple.

I disagree. Adobe has prepared its software for use within operating systems which it does not own, e.g Windows, OSX, Android, and IOS. Without distributing a complete environment it absolutely is responsible for its software working at a user level by coordination with the operating system companies.

Hi Bernd,

As mentioned above, we would prefer to use the built-in IOS mail reader than Acrobat Reader for IOS. We can open and view the PDF but the drop-downs don't function correctly. For us to approve and push an entirely separate app to all users just for this is complex.

For problems with this mail reader you must contact the support of Apple.
