Disappearing and Corrupted Text

After working tirelessly on editing a PDF in Adobe Acrobat, the text is either corrupted (letters and numbers are replaced with an "x") or the text disappears all together after its saved. Because of this, I have to edit the PDF all over again. Does anyone know the cause of this issue or how to resolve it?
