Question

Distiller stopped working

Hi. I am using distiller to monitor a folder (which my own application creates PS files in). It was working fine a couple of weeks ago. But now, when I just open it, it just hangs and all I can do is close the program. Any ideas?

I had to change my registered email for my account recently. But everything else seems to be working OK, including Acrobat DC (I am running 20.012.20043.3217).

I noticed that Distiller seems to be a 32 bit version, which is odd as (like any modern PC) mine is 64 bit. But I assume this is not the cause of the problem.

Thanks for any help, Mike

Is this happening with every file? Or just a few particular files?

In the case of this issue happening with only a few particular files , maybe you need to confirm if the document(s) that you're trying to postscript have restrictions that prevent such action(s).

Also, how were you able to determine if Acrobat Distiller is a 64 bit application?

From your screenshot above it seems that you're using MS Windows 10 (or similar MS Windows family OS, not macOS).

Acrobat 64bit is only available to macOS at this time.

That said, 32 bit programs, such "Acrodist.exe", install to C:\Program Files (x86) and not to C:\Program Files  (which is where 64 bit programs are installed to in MS Windows.

If you are on MS Windows 10, maybe  you're using the  Adobe PDF Converter as a default printer, for example, which directly interfaces with the Acrobat Distiller settings.

The printer driver, on the other hand,  is or could be configured to be used  with a  64-bit, 32-bit, or ARM operating system for a specific shared printing environment.

When you go to "Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers" and right-click  on Adobe PDF printer icon, select "Printer Properties" from the context menu, then go to the "Sharing" tab --->>> "Additional Drivers".

See if my silde below is what you're referring to:

Sorry. Maybe I was not being very clear. PDF printer is working fine (in 64 bit mode).

The issue is only with distiller, which I have used (on and off) for many years.

I have s/w of my own that generates .eps files. I create them in a directory that I add to the distiller watch directories. Distiller then converts them to pdf files, together with a log file (in an output directory). If there is a mistake in my eps file I can see what happened in the log file.

Worked fine until this week. I had not used it for a couple of weeks. Maybe the fact that I changed my Adobe user email (the one I log in with) two or thee weeks ago. Now, when I start distiller, it immediately hangs -- no chance to change any settings (e.g. the watched directory). Cannot do anything at all!

I have uninstalled Acrobat DC and removed all relevant directories from Program Files (x86)/Adobe. I verified that the Acrobat DC directory no longer existed. I then einstalled Acrobat DC. Ran distiller (using shortcut "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat\acrodist.exe".

Same problem as before.

Other applications seemed to be working fine. I mainly use distiller and Acrobat DC, but I checked and Photoshop seems to be working fine too.

Here (attached) is contents of relevant directory.
