downloads from drop box, and adobe is manipulating characters when trying to scan to disk??

Received a drop box document. needed to scan onto disk. when scanned, adobe had manipulated characters, and put squares, and different icons where words should be. This document already was ocr'd when pulled out of drop box.  any help would be appreciated!
