Editing a pdf document makes a file bigger

When you edit a pdf document, its size grows significantly. After several edits file may grow from 1 MB to 2-4 MB and more. The more you edit, the bigger the file becomes (you don't add much information, simply change text).

The only way to avoid this odd behaviour is to use "File - Save as" command and replace the existing file.

When you use the Save command a "snapshot" of the file is saved and added to previous such snapshots. When you use Save As the file is optimized and all previous "snapshots" are discarded, which can decrease its size substantially.

Yes. Exactly so. Save is designed to be very quick but Save As reclaims space.
