Edits make PDF file increase in size

Old bug, still not fixed:

When you edit a pdf file and save it, the file size increases every time. Even if you perform some minor edits, like text edits. Eventually files grow in size x2 and more times. This should not happen. Word documents don’t change size much if you just alter some text without adding a lot of data.

    Hi Igor5FEB,

Thank you for reaching out, and raising this.

Unlike Word documents, PDFs are not designed to be “rewritten” efficiently after every edit.

When you make edits in the PDF, it adds as a new object. Even small edits (like correcting a word) can result in

    • New font subsets are being embedded

    • New text streams are being added

    • Metadata and object references are increasing

So although it looks like a simple change, internally the PDF grows.

You may try the following suggestion to keep the file increase in size:

    • Use “Save As” Instead of “Save”: It rewrites the PDF structure, removes unused objects and old revisions, which often significantly reduces the file size.

    • Optimize the PDF: In Acrobat, Go to File → Save as Other → Optimized PDF.

    • Reduce the font embedding by avoiding unnecessary font changes and using standard fonts when possible.

    • You may flatten the PDF when editing is complete to reduce the file size.

If that does not help and the size is increasing to twice the actual size, please share a short video showing the changes you made in the file and the PDF's new size. Also, please share the original PDF with us so we can check it.

Let us know if you need any help.

    Thanks,

    Meenakshi
