Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid. Uninstall/repair

Hi all,

I’m trying to fix an issue where all my .pdf files just show as white rectangles in Windows Explorer instead of proper PDF thumbnails.

When I try to repair, reinstall, or uninstall Adobe [Acrobat / Creative Cloud Desktop / specify the app], I get this error:

Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid.

Nothing so far has helped.

What I have tried

  • Repair from Programs and Features, same error

  • Uninstall from Creative Cloud and from Programs and Features, same error

  • Run installers as Administrator

  • Sign out of Creative Cloud Desktop, quit it, sign back in

  • Cleared the TEMP folder

  • Disabled antivirus and Windows Defender

  • Ran Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to clean the affected app and CC Desktop
  • Used Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter

System

  • Windows 11 Home:

  • Affected app and version: Acrobat Pro

  • Install source: Creative Cloud Desktop

Happy to attach any logs that help.

If helpful, I can also check the Windows Installer registry entries for the affected Adobe product and share what I find. But I only have basic IT knowledge, so I would need to be told step-by-step how to gather any other information.

Question
How can I get past the “Error applying transforms” problem so I can fix the missing PDF thumbnails?

Thanks in advance.

This error usually occurs during the installation, modification, or uninstallation of Windows Installer (.msi) programs. It means the system cannot find or read a specific transformation file (.mst) required to configure the software.

Quick Fixes

  • Clear the installer cache: Delete all files inside C:\Windows\Temp and C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Local\Temp.
  • Run as administrator: Right-click the setup file and select Run as administrator.
  • Move the installer: Copy the installer file directly to your C:\ drive root folder and run it from there.

Fix Registry Corruptions

Invalid paths stored in the Windows Registry frequently cause this issue.

  1. Press Windows Key + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products
  3. Press Ctrl + F and search for the name of the software causing the error.
  4. Select the registry folder found for that software.
  5. Look for a value named Transforms in the right pane.
  6. Right-click Transforms and select Delete.
  7. Close the Registry Editor and retry your installation.

Advanced Troubleshooting

  • Use Microsoft Troubleshooter: Download and run the official Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter to repair broken registry keys automatically.
  • Unregister Windows Installer: Open Command Prompt as administrator and run msiexec /unregister.
  • Reregister Windows Installer: In the same Command Prompt window, run msiexec /regserver.

Hi @bridget22148281huas,

Hope you are doing well. Sorry to hear about your experience.

From the description, it seems like an issue with the Microsoft Installer Exchange program which is not able to parse the process.

Here are a few steps recommended by Microsoft experts on their forums which might be helpful: https://adobe.ly/4nh7GMJ

Please try the steps and let us know if it helps.

Regards,
Souvik.

Hi,  i am still ubale to update, i am now getting the error.

I never change where things are supposed to go (the programs normally know the best place to be).

However, when I look at the pathway, I no longer have the Acrobat folder - not sure where that went to.

So, how do i get that back/fix the issue?

Thank you.
