Error message re upgrade when I am looking at a PDF

Shortly after I open an existing PDF, this message pops up in my Acrobat XI Pro:

Serial Number Upgrade

Serial number you provided is valid, but a qualifying product could not be found.

I am not trying to upgrade; I have not provided a serial number, so what is going on?

I did this last night with no success. I did it again just now. The "Serial Number Upgrade" error message showed up this time as soon as I launched Acrobat.


Yes you are upgrading. What you have is an UPGRADE SERIAL NUMBER. To use it you must have owned Acrobat 9 of 10. Just enter the serial number of the older version to prove you are eligible.

you should be given an option to select the acrobat version you upgraded from (9 or x).  select the correct program and then enter its serial number.

I reinstalled XI Pro on a new computer. I was not upgrading.

when you start the xi installation and after you enter your xi serial number, is that when you see a message about a qualifying product?
