Can someone tell me why Adobe Acrobat Pro cannot find all the instances of words when searching?

Can someone also tell me why it might indicate, for instance, that it found eight citings of a word but the actual count is two?

Without seeing a sample file (even a single page that demonstrates the issue) it's very difficult to help you with this matter. As was mentioned previously, what you see is not always what there is behind the scenes in a PDF file. There can be hidden text, layers, fields, comments or all manners of things... Unless we can examine the file for ourselves we can't say for sure.

If Acrobat finds eight, there are eight. May be they are hidden? Or invisible, like white ink on white background?

No, these are standard client-supplied PDFs. Nothing is hidden.

The advanced search does not offer a better result.
