Fonts are too thin in Acrobat

Thanks. I have already tried #1. It didn’t make a difference. On #2, I don’t see that option on get info. And, it is the latest version. 

Not to apologize for Adobe Systems — I’m an end user just like you — but one of the great lies of our time, right up there with “I’m from the government and I’m here to help you”, is WYSIWYG … What You See Is What You Get. Acrobat is one of many programs that may show different characteristics onscreen between different zoom percentages. Are we talking about what you see at 100% display view percentage? Or Fit in Window view?

I don’t question what you’re seeing. I’m sure you’re accurately reporting what you see onscreen. But you already know with different zoom views there is no issue. You add that there’s none when it prints either. Acrobat gave up font hinting (artificially thickening character appearance/printing for low resolution output devices) long ago. It stinks, but I think you may need to chalk that up to the vagaries of Acrobat visual reproduction.

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out. We are sorry for the trouble you are experiencing.

You've actually done a lot of the detective work for us already the fact that it reproduces across clean accounts, multiple Acrobat versions, and multiple fonts tells us this is a display rendering difference, not a file corruption issue. 

Acrobat uses a different font rendering engine from macOS Preview and most other apps like Safari, Chrome, and Word  which all use Apple's native text rendering stack. Acrobat's rendering is actually closer to how the document would look when printed, which is technically more accurate but can look lighter on screen compared to Preview's heavier antialiasing. This difference also tends to improve noticeably at higher zoom levels.

Please try the steps below and see if that works:

Step 1: Adjust the Page Display rendering settings

This is the most common fix for exactly what you're describing.

1. Open Acrobat Pro and go to Acrobat > Preferences (Ctrl,Cmd+K)

2. Select Page Display from the left panel

3. Under the Rendering section, look for these three options and try toggling them:

   • Smooth Text  try each option in the dropdown (For Monitor is usually best for Retina screens)

   • Enhance Thin Lines  try unchecking this first; it's on by default but on Retina/5K displays it can paradoxically make text look lighter and thinner

   • Smooth Line Art toggle this off and see if it helps

4. Click OK, close and reopen your PDF, and compare
    

Step 2: Check that Acrobat is running in full Retina resolution

1. Quit Acrobat completely

2. Open Finder, navigate to Applications, and locate Adobe Acrobat

3. Right-click > Get Info

4. Make sure "Open in Low Resolution" is unchecked if it's checked (or grayed out), that means Acrobat isn't using your display's full pixel density

Step 3: Confirm your Acrobat version is current

Go to Help > Check for Updates and make sure you're on the latest release 26.001.21691 Planned update, Jun 25, 2026
