Fonts lost on file merge

I have two PDFs using Adobe Jenson Pro. When I insert one into the other the inserted file shows boxes where the characters should be and it seems the embedded fonts are lost. Even weirder, when I save the file, the same happens to the original file which, until that point, displayed correctly. Despite having Acrobat Pro 64-bit, when I try to open Preflight, I'm told it "is getting installed" and then the install fails. HELP!

    I have now uninstalled Acrobat and re-installed it from Creative Cloud and it has defaulted to the old interface. The files all open with now fonts and clicking Preflight gives no result at all. What is going on???
