Getting a 'file may be read only, or another user may have it open' error when trying to save a PDF

When I open a file from an email attachment and try to save it, I am getting an error:

'File may be read only, or another user may have it open.  Please save the document with a different name or in a different folder'

In these situations, I am attempting to save a new copy to a location that does not have a folder with this name.  I have discovered that I can drag the email attachment over to my desktop and then manually rename it, but this is the only way that I can get the PDF on to my computer.

Can anyone provide some guidance on this issue?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out, and sorry about the trouble.

Please try the suggestion provided on the following community thread with a similar discussion: https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/can-t-save-quot-the-file-may-be-read-only-or-another-user-may-have-it-open-please-save-the-document/m-p/8797519.

Check if that helps.

If that doesn't help, please let us know if it occurs with any PDF attachment you try to save. Please try once to open the file using the attachment drop-down and select Open in Adobe Acrobat. Check if you still get the error when saving the file.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Meenakshi

I was able to work with the file if I used the 'Open in Adobe Acrobat' in the attachment menu, but the other issue remained.  I am using a different PDF reader at this point, but will re-visit the issue if necessary.

Thanks.
