Hello, I'm having issues with printed pdf files. When I print the file name sometimes has .pdf at the end of the file name and some don't. So when I'm trying to put them together into one file the ones without .pdf are not showing up even though they are in the folder, I don't know how to resolve this, I have tried the following steps that I found online, and nothing since to work, sorry for the long comments, any help would be appreciated, thanks so much
Browser Behavior:
- Different browsers may handle file downloads differently. Some may automatically add the .pdf extension, while others rely on the server to specify the extension.
Bank Website Configuration:
- The website might not be consistent in providing the file name for each document, leading to variations when the browser generates the file name.
Printer/Save Dialog Issue:
- If you're saving the file via a print dialog (e.g., Save as PDF), the dialog may inconsistently apply the extension based on internal settings or metadata in the document.
Operating System/Environment Settings:
- Your system might be configured to hide known file extensions, making it seem like the file name is inconsistent.
Troubleshooting Steps
Check Browser Settings:
- Test with different browsers (e.g., Chrome, Edge, Firefox) to see if the behavior is consistent across them.
- Clear the cache or update your browser to ensure there are no corrupted settings.
Rename Files:
- As a temporary fix, you can manually rename the files to add the .pdf extension where it's missing. Use a batch renaming tool if there are many files
Print to PDF Settings:
- If you're printing to PDF, check the settings in the print dialog. Ensure that the "Add extension" or similar option is selected.
Disable Hidden Extensions:
- On Windows, check if file extensions for known file types are hidden:
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to "View" > "Options" > "View" tab.
- Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types."
- This will make all extensions visible.
- On Windows, check if file extensions for known file types are hidden:
Combine PDFs Using Software:
- Use a dedicated PDF tool (e.g., Adobe Acrobat, PDFsam, or a similar tool) to merge files. These tools often recognize files as PDFs even without the extension.
Preventive Measures
Standardize Browser Use: Always use a browser that you know works consistently for downloading files
