Grids and Scaling

I have a cemetery map which was created with Adobe (at least it has a 'pdf' file extension). I am ASSUMING that in order for the map to be anywhere near correct, there is a way to place a 'scale' over the entire area. Is that correct and if so, once I purdchase Acrobat, how to I make sure I've placed the same scale over the area?
