How can I NOT convert handwritten notes when scanning meeting agenda?

Is there a way to scan and edit text of a meeting agenda, one with a few handwritten notes on it, without Adobe trying to convert the handwriting to text?  I used to be able to, but this a.m. it began overwriting my handwritten notes with nonsense letters and symbols.
