How do I control initial tab focus within a radio button group?

I created an interactive PDF in InDesign. The overall tab order is correct and flows properly between fields.

However, when tabbing into a radio button group when the pdf is opened in Acrobat, focus lands on the first radio button that was created instead of the first option in the group. This makes the form feel sloppy and inconsistent.

I have already tried reordering the fields in Acrobat under Edit → Prepare Form → Fields, but that did not change the behavior.

It appears Acrobat is prioritizing widget creation order inside the radio group rather than the document tab order.

Is there a way to control which radio button in a group receives focus first when tabbing into the group?

Thank you for your help! I’m banging my head against a wall here...

Use a check-box group and you’ll be able to control it. Give the fields the same name, but unique export values, and then they’ll act as a group (just like a radio-button group, except you could unselect it), and you’ll be able to set their tab order as you wish.

Hi there. Thanks for the response. I’m not quite sure what you mean by “unique export values”. Do you mean “button value” at the end?

Probably, but I would recommend editing the fields in Acrobat, not InDesign.

Hi @Adam34664626x5pp

Thanks for raising this and for the link to the accessibility guidance.

This is working as designed: Tab / Shift+Tab move between form fields (a radio group is one field), not between each individual option, and arrow keys are used to navigate the choices inside a radio group.

Prepare Form’s tab-order controls operate at the field level (which field comes next), not at the per-option/widget level inside a multi-widget field, so changing tab order in Prepare Form won’t change which radio widget gets initial focus. If the initially focused option isn’t what you expect, the reliable workarounds are to recreate the radio widgets in the desired order (or add script logic), but I completely understand how that can feel inconsistent — I’ll pass this feedback along so the product team can consider clearer documentation or UX options.

Thanks for taking the time to report it — feedback like this genuinely helps improve the product.
