How do I create forms that convert text entered to barcodes (Acrobat XI Pro)?

When I try to follow instructions I've found so far, I don't seem to have the same options as specified in the instructions.

Do I need any additional packages/plugins, or a different version of Acrobat?

What kind of barcodes? What symbology?

According to instructions for adding a barcode field here, PDF barcode form fields  it looks like there should be a barcode option in a toolbar (I'd likely use the PDF417 linear barcode of the 3 options there), which I don't have. But those instructions are for Acrobat 2017 and Acrobat DC. So maybe I need a newer version.

I couldn't find instructions for installing my own barcode. I have the IDAutomation HC39M Free Version installed in my Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word), and that works well with our barcode scanners. But I haven't seen a way to install in Acrobat. It may just be the version I'm using.

Ultimately what I want to do is create a field where someone can type in some text to fill out the form, and then it converts the text entered into a barcode (which can be printed and scanned (with a handheld barcode scanner) by someone else at a different location). I'm not sure if the newer versions can do this, or if a custom script, etc, is required.

Thanks!

Are you planning on using this file in Reader, or just in Acrobat?

If the former then you can only use a barcode font if you want it to be dynamic, unless you apply a very expensive right to the file.
