Question

How do I stop Excel hyperlinked files from opening in full screen when opening from Explorer is OK?

I regularly hyperlink 1,000s of pdfs in excel for auditing purposes. My problem is this:

  • Opening a PDF from explorer opens an additional tab in the Acrobat window without changing the size of the window, however
  • opening a PDF from a hyperlink in Excel forces Acrobat into full screen mode.

How do I stop the Excel linked files from opening full screen?

I don't have any macros running in the Excel file, I just paste in the file path and use the inbuilt hyperlink formula.

In case it helps I'm running Adobe Acrobat Pro DC (continuous release 2021,001,20142) on Windows 10 (version 20H2). My Acrobat settings are:

  • Full screen settings ticked
    • current docuemnt only;
    • fill screen with one page at a time;
    • alert when doc requests full screen;
    • escape key exits;
    • left click to go forward; and
    • disable all page transitions.
  • Page display
    • page layout: single page; and
    • Zoom: 100%.

In addition, I have changed my registry entry for bLastExitNormal to '0' but without effect (another forum suggested changing 'bLastExitNormal' from '1' to '0' in the following registry path 'HKCU\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobt\DC\ExitSection'). Though as noted, the issue of opening PDFs in full screen only affects when I open the file from an Excel hyperlink, so this may not be an appropriate fix in any case for this issue.

Any further suggestions would be extremely helpful.

I must apologise - I did just bump an old post with this but felt it was more approriate to start afresh on second thoughts.

Kind regards

Hi,

Are you able to share a sample excell file that shows the problem?

Thanks for responding.

Sorry.  I cannot provide the specific example as the documents are confidential.

In my case the excel is created by others in the firm.

Essentially the hyperlink simply links to a document in a folder.  That folder is at the same level as the excel document that lists the files.

I will try and create a sample from home over the weekend if I get a chance and upload.  If I don't have the same problem at home it may be due to an environment setting as we use virtual desktops.  Which if the case opens a whole new can of worms.

Hi,

no problem, a sample helps us as it can lead to it being an application setting or an environmental issue ( as you mention) so we can narrow down where the problem is.
