How to combine PDF files, one page from each, in turn?

I'm looking for a way to combine PDF files, taking one page from each file in turn. (Kind of like "reverse dealing" cards back into the deck.)

MacOS Automator calls this "shuffle" combining.

If you want to do it with two files, you can use this (paid-for) tool I've developed for this purpose:

Thanks, but $50 is a bit much for a script.

I need 4 files processed. But if the answer is: "it can only be done in Acrobat using scripting", then that's good to know.
