Question

How to -easily- create patterns for redact?

Hello all,,

For my work we have to redact a lot of files and mark sensitive information. Mostly contact-information of people.

The problem is that we do not have to remove the full contact-information, just the first part of the email-adress (so everything before the '@' -sign) and the last part of the number (everything after the '-'). My best guess would be to use 'patterns' for this (we use Adobe Acrobat XI Pro).

But now I am facing a problem:.

- How can I import my own patterns? I found something online about appdata, but the problem is that we I can't just find the appdata on our computers, since programms are installed by our IT-people on a central system and I -as a regular user- can't just access this.

I honestly don't understand why this is hidden away so far, and why Adobe just doesn't add a 'import pattern' button...

Much appreciated,

Joren

you need to go into the redaction menu and commence redacting, including accessing/playing with the properties box, use codes etc. you will then see the folder structure appear

The appdata folder is sometimes hidden. You can find the XML redaction file at: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\XI\Redaction\ENU

This tutorial explains how you can create your own patterns with a bit of work.

@Ikasabbu,

Thanks for the quick reply! I have gotten to:

C:\user\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\XI <11.0 in my version>\

But in my case there is no 'Redaction' only:

  • Collab
  • Forms
  • JSCache
  • Security
  • Stamps
  • TMDocs.sav
  • TMGrpPrm.sav

And neither in the <local>  or <LocalLow> (instead of <Roaming>), can i find the <Redaction>  folder.

Any idea why this is the case? Can I just add a foler named <Redaction> in which I put a <ENU> folder and just add an XML redaction file?

Best,

Joren

You can try that but it sounds like you don't have a complete installation. You should have three XML files in the ENU folder:
SearchRedactPatterns.xml

U.S. FOIA.xml

U.S. Privacy Act.xml

You might try running a Repair of your installation to see if it corrects the issue.
