How to improve scanned ID quality in Adobe for online verification (appointment documents)?

Hi, I’m preparing my documents for an NBI online appointment, and I noticed that my scanned ID looks a bit blurry and unclear when viewed in Adobe Acrobat. Since these documents are used for official verification, I want to make sure the quality is clear and acceptable.

I tried scanning from my phone, but after opening the file in Acrobat, the text and photo are not sharp enough. I also checked some basic tips here: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/edit-scanned-pdfs.html but still not getting the best result.

Is there any way in Acrobat to enhance or improve the scan quality?

Also, are there any recommended settings (resolution, format, etc.) to make sure documents are properly readable for verification systems?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

you can try “Enhance Scan” tool in Acrobat bro, it help a bit with sharpness and text clarity. also make sure your scan is at least 300 DPI, below that quality get blurry easily.

if you using phone, try scan in good lighting and keep ID flat, apps like Adobe Scan or Microsoft Lens give better result than normal camera. for NBI docs, clear text and no blur is most important

I think you’ve got a basic mechanical issue here.

If, like most all ID cards, the image you’re trying to scan is sealed inside lamination to protect the printed-substrate ID documentation. If you’re trying to get an accurate representation of that by mechanical scanning, unfortunately you’re build to lose because:

    1. Even when you’re dealing with distance measured in thousandths of an inch (that’s what the “mil” measures for the thickness of your laminates) you’re changing the focal length ever so slightly. That may seem minimal — pun intended — but it will slightly affect the result of a flatbed scan. But that doesn’t factor nearly as much as …
    2. The quality of the laminate, even the ones billed as “clear” will be variable and problematic. Laminates that advertise features like “UV resistant” and any that are translucent at even the lowest level will be only moreso, and ...
    3. Many laminates are designed to be difficult to scan. Document protection features in security documents are made to make sure what you’re trying to do won’t work cleanly.

The alternative would be either to 1) somehow get a copy of the original digital file without any of the limitations of lamination, or reproduction for that matter; or 2) consider that most everyone is dong the same thing you’re doing, enduring the same reproduction limitations, and still getting their appointment applications accepted.

I mean no disrespect, but I believe you may be over-thinking this a little bit.

You do not say how you are scanning, nor do you say what you are scanning with. It’s very hard to help improve what you are doing when we do not know what you are doing.

Do, keep in mind that Acrobat itself, cannot scan. Rather, it uses some software called Twain (if you are on a PC) to link to your scanner’s software. On a Mac, it links to Apple’s Image Capture (one of the worst scanning software application available anywhere).

So, first I recommend you do not try scanning directly through Acrobat. Use the software that came with your scanning directly.

But, I do go back to my original question: what kind of scanner are you using, and how are you using it?

Thanks, but I think this is not related to my issue. I’m trying to improve scan quality for official documents in Adobe Acrobat, not download files. If you have any tips for clearer scans, please share.

Sorry, but unless anyone knows what you are doing, and how you are doing it, I’m not sure if anyone can help.

IF you are doing scans of documents inside a laminated film, as suggested by @Randy Hagan, that is very likely a possible answer, but no one knows at this point.
