Question

How to stop PDF from shifting when opening tab

In the last few weeks, when I click on a new tab, the PDF document for the new tab shifts ever so slightly to the left (depending on the document's sizing and placement... sometimes I think it shifts down instead). When I release the tab at the top, the document shifts back to the center of the screen.

The shift is minor -- probably a few millimeters, but it's very annoying because I'm often comparing document designs, and I will switch between tabs to compare any changes. For example, maybe I'm reviewing a postcard where we changed a date. I want to make sure nothing else changed in the postcard except the dates and a quick flip between tabs used to do the trick for me, but alas, no more. Yes, I know I could use the Compare feature by Adobe but 1) it sometimes misses changes or catches too much or 2) it is far more cumbersome than a quick switch between tabs.

I've looked through the Adobe preferences and can't find anything that turns off this feature. I have reverted to an old version of Adobe, but then I lose a lot of current Adobe features and it also ended up reverting back to the newest version on its own, so it seems like I'd constantly have to keep reverting back to the old version.

To note, I'm using a Mac and my current version of Acrobat is 25.1.20476.0. Many thanks for any tips!

@UserName2025 try disabling GPU acceleration within Acrobat's preferences: go to Acrobat > Settings (or Preferences) > 3D & Multimedia or Page Display (look for options related to "Graphics Processor" or "GPU acceleration") and uncheck any relevant boxes, then restart Acrobat. Additionally, consider resetting Acrobat's preferences (requires backing up custom settings) as corrupted preference files can cause display glitches. As a workaround for your comparison workflow, instead of tab-flipping, you might find it less disruptive to use Acrobat's Window > Tile feature to arrange documents side-by-side for direct visual comparison.

Thank you for the reply. I did not see anything labeled "Graphics Processor" or "GPU accelation" or anything similar, but I just unchecked everything on the Page Display window to see if anything makes a difference, but even after restarting, the issue persists. It seems that this issue, though, is a feature of Adobe rather than a bug, perhaps to make it clear when someone is switching between tabs. I just wish the feature could be turned off. I appreciate your feedback.

Hi @UserName2025,

Thanks for sharing this!

When a PDF shifts position (e.g., zooms, or scrolls) upon opening in a new tab, it’s often due to how the file's initial view settings are configured or how the PDF viewer (like Acrobat or browser-based PDF handlers) interprets those settings.

Here are a few things to check or try:

1. Check Initial View Settings in Acrobat

If you’re the creator of the PDF:

  • Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro

  • Go to File > Properties > Initial View

  • Set Navigation tab to “Page Only”

  • Set Magnification to “Default” or “Fit Page”

  • Set Open to Page to “1” (or your preferred)

  • Save the file again

This tells the PDF how it should behave when opened, including zoom level and scroll position.

2. Are you opening in Acrobat or a browser?

If you’re opening in a browser like Chrome or Edge:

  • Browser PDF viewers may ignore some initial view settings.

  • Try opening the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader/Pro and see if the issue persists.

3. Tab behavior/anchor links

If you’re clicking a link or reloading the file in a tab:

  • Some links within the PDF or external anchor links (e.g., file.pdf#page=2) may cause the file to auto-scroll or shift focus on open.

4. Embedded viewer on a website?

If the PDF is embedded in a site, iframe styling or JS may affect the rendering position.

Let us know:

  • Where you’re opening the file (Acrobat app, browser, etc.)

  • If the file has any links or forms

  • Whether this happens with all PDFs or just a specific one

We’ll gladly help further once we know more!
