How to Troubleshoot Slow PDF Opening in Acrobat

I am having an issue since the latest windows update and Adobe updates where opening up multiple pdf's take an extremly long time. The problem appears to get worse if the file is large and the more pdf' you have open th slower it gets as well. If you close adobe acrobat down and reopen the first file opens quickly. I have 32 GB of RAM on a 13 generation i7 processor so processing power is not the issue. I have also tried disabling the security and enhanced security as well as disabling the show online storage when opening files. I have also disabled the modern Acrobat interface.

    Hi all,

How do I troubleshoot Acrobat opening PDF files slowly?

Adobe recommends following the steps mentioned below sequentially until the issue is resolved.

    1. Update Acrobat to the latest available version.
    2. Restart your computer.
    3. Run Menu > Help > Repair Installation (Windows).
    4. Test opening the same PDF again.

If the issue continues, try these two settings:

    • Disable Page Cache: Menu > Preferences > Page Display > Rendering, then uncheck Use Page Cache. This setting preloads the next page into a buffer to speed up navigation, but on some systems it increases CPU usage and slows things down instead — disabling it has resolved slow or laggy opening for many users.
    • Disable generative AI features: Menu > Preferences > Generative AI, then deselect Enable generative AI features in Acrobat. These features are enabled by default. Some users have reported that generative AI processes loading at startup can add to opening delays, particularly on systems without dedicated GPU support — your results may vary.

How can I determine whether the issue is document-specific?

Compare the behavior by opening multiple PDF files.

    • If the issue occurs only with one PDF, the behavior may be document-specific — large embedded images, scanned content, or complex vector elements can slow rendering.
    • If the issue occurs with multiple PDFs, continue with the troubleshooting workflow.
    • If the issue occurs only when opening PDFs from a network location, test the same PDF from a local drive to help determine whether the behavior is related to the document or the storage location.

Should I temporarily disable Protected Mode while troubleshooting?

Protected Mode is enabled by default and is Acrobat's primary sandboxing security feature. Keep it enabled during normal use.

If you're troubleshooting a compatibility issue, you can temporarily disable Protected Mode as a diagnostic step. After testing, re-enable it so Acrobat continues to benefit from its built-in security protections.

If changing this setting affects the behavior, update incompatible third-party security software or plug-ins where possible, rather than leaving Protected Mode disabled.

What should I do if the issue persists?

If Acrobat continues to open PDF files slowly after trying the steps above, collect Adobe Acrobat Diagnostics logs while reproducing the issue and share them with Adobe Support.

Acrobat Diagnostics captures product logs, process information, and system information that can help Adobe Support investigate Acrobat performance issues.

Having similar issues in our environment on a few machines. Only true similarity is that they are fully updated W11 Pro machines with Acrobat Pro licensing. Files are slow to open whenever opening a file from explorer, but open quickly when opening from File>Open dialogue inside of Acrobat. Version rollbacks and re-installs have been unhelpful. It's odd because there are other machines in our environment running the same setup without issue and I can't find any clear difference between the machines that are and are not working.

Next step is likley to wipe out all adobe products, completely wipe them out in profile AppData and registry and reinstall, but hoping to avoid that if possible.

We ordered few new Adobe Standard licenses for totally brand new win11 workstations.  The problems started immediately on these machines as well. New installations behave exactly the same way as years-old Windows 10 workstations with fresh Adobe Reader installations and versions.

@adobe is there an update on this issue?

I am seeing multiple clients with this issue.

This occurs when the PC is on windows 24h2 and adobe version 24.005.20320

I agree, I am on Win10 and I have several coworkers on both Win10 and Win11 and we all have the same issue.

This seems to still be an issue

I have tried disabling the new acrobat and unchecking the run in app container and this issue still exists for our client.

This is painful. It has a significant impact on our customer meetings, where hundreds of PDF documents are opened daily

It is truly frustrating.  Class action lawsuit??? We pay a LOT of money for this product and my attorneys are beyond frustrated that they can't fix this issue. It has been months that this is a problem.

I'm in the same boat, driving me crazy!  I might as well get used to BlueBeam like several other people in our office use.

The only "workaround" I've found so far, which only works about 50% of the time, is to uncheck the "Run in AppContainer" checkbox in Preferences.  Then the slowness opening files is more intermittent, again about 50/50 but it's better than it was.  Still waiting for a true fix.

    Hi,

Same problem in our environment. No matter if old win10 or new win11 install, but with these latest Adobe Reader versions opening pdf files are extremily slow. I have tried "everything", but nothing seems to work.

I have this issue on my Windows 10 machine, but also with other applications like Microsoft Word, which let's me think that it is an OS issue. As a workaround, I open Acrobat and use drag-and-drob.

Several users at our company are having the same issue, opening each file after the first one takes 30-60 seconds.  Some machines are Win10, others are Win11.  Adobe seems to be the only program with the issue, no problems with Word/etc.
Opening Acrobat then drag & drop does not speed it up at all, still takes forever to open.
Anybody else figure out a solution here?  I open PDF files all day long so this has really become quite a problem for us.

I opened up a ticket with Adobe support and spoke to a senior technician. They have assigned this issue as a bug ADC-4490483 and we are now waiting for them to fix the issue. The techncian did roll back the Adobe Acrobat to a previous version but that did not fix the problem which makes me think its a windows update that is causing the issue with the Adobe Acrobat application. The issue doesn't seem to be as bad if you are just using the Adobe Reader.
