How to use highlight tool when you don't want to select text?

The highlighter tool switches to a text selection I-beam when it thinks there is OCR'd text. I've tried to get rid of the OCR text ghost via "Protect PDF" and hiding/removing data and that is totally ineffective. Also, saving as with both optimized and reduced size does not make a difference.

I’m afraid that you may be out of luck. The highlighter tool, by Acrobat definition, is designed to mark up text.

It’s not designed as a drawing tool. But Acrobat does have drawing tools. You can learn more about those through this article link:

Hope this helps with what you need,

Thank you for your answer. It’s good to have this settled, I guess. The magic of the highlighter pen, that does not exist in workarounds, is its multiply/darken layer effect. Just like a highlighter pen. When used to highlight text that did not have a successful OCR run, it highlights invisible text that does not align with the visible raster image. This is useless. You should be able to see what is highlighted. Please add an option key, um, option, to enable a true highlighter pen that works on the raster image only. Or, failing that, use a different icon so that people don’t expect the availability and function of a highlighter pen. This is frustrating for your users and an implication that the software does not work—this isn’t  open source freeware or excuseware. And also, please make it simple and obvious to delete hidden OCR text. “Edit” implies the ability to delete. Thank you.

    Hi KDSmith,

Thank you for reaching out, and sorry for the trouble caused.

If you are trying to use the tool to draw or mark, you may use the quick action tool pane, as suggested by Randy Hagan. You may refer to the steps suggested in the following help document: Add shapes, lines, and freeform drawings. Check the screenshot below:

Let us know if you are trying something else.

    Thanks,
